چکیده

Nitrate contamination is one of the major problems in groundwater, which is increasingly becoming a threat to groundwater supplies. Nitrogen in groundwater also results from human excreta, ground garbage and industrial effluents, particularly from food processing plants. In order to remove nitrate from a water source, such as ground water the biological denitrification technology can be applied for which a carbon and energy source is needed. The aim of this study was to construct an easy to operate reactor to treat the NO3 contaminated (ground) water to such qualities that it can be used as drinking water for cattle. To achieve this objective it was investigated whether saw dust as an alternative carbon source for the bacterial denitrification, could be used. For this purpose a low maintenance reactor, which was inoculated with anaerobic digester sludge, was fed with nitrate rich (100-200 mgN/L) water. A 100% nitrate removal was observed when the feed water contained 200 mg/• NO3-N at a Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) of 1 day, operating a stable reactor system. It was shown that similar nitrate removal rates were obtained when the reactor was operated at room or mesophilic temperatures.

Comparison of ethanol, methanol and succinate effects as carbon sources on effluent biological denitrification

Abstract Background: Increase of nitrate concentration in water sources is becoming a serious problem in many parts of the world. Nitrogen containing compounds released into environment can create serious problems, such as eutrophication of water sources and hazard potential to human health, because it has potency of causing methemoglubinemia disease and cancer. Between recommended methods, bi...

Surveying Denitrification Efficacy in Up-Flow Packed Bed Bioreactor Operated under Heterotrophic Condition Using Autotrophic Bacteria

Introduction: The biological denitrification process is an interesting cost-effective technique to remove nitrate from water supplies. Acetic acid can be used as a carbon source in this process, but its consumption rate is a critical issue and, in some cases, it is quite different from stoichiometric constants. The current study aimed to investigate the nitrate removal in an up-flow packed bed ...

The Mechanism of Chromium Biosorption by Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

The Biosorption property of S. cerevisiae for chromium uptake was investigated in an immobilized cell bioreactor. Saw dust was utilized as the solid bed in the reactor. Adsorption of S. cerevisiae on saw dust obeys a first order reaction kinetic up to 6 hours. The immobilized biomass particles are porous and exist in the new generation of biological adsorbent. Chromium biosorption was studied i...
